Overmantel mirrors gained prominence in 18th-century France during the reign of Louis XV. Designed specifically to sit above fireplace hearths, these mirrors featured elaborate carved scrollwork, rocaille motifs, and gilded finishes intended to catch and amplify candlelight across grand reception rooms.

Carved mirror frames were traditionally constructed from timber, coated with layers of gesso plaster, and finished using water gilding or oil gilding techniques with fine gold leaf. The mirror plates were historically made using mercury amalgam or silvered glass.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit signs of hand-carved timber backings, fine craquelure in the gesso layer, and subtle wear where the red or grey clay bole shows through worn gold leaf. Original silvered or mercury glass often displays light foxing and minor oxidisation near the frame edges.
