Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Rococo overmantel mirrors from the 18th century feature elaborate asymmetrical ornamentation, shell motifs, acanthus foliage, and C-scroll motifs. Designed to sit directly above a chimneypiece, they emphasize organic curves and fluid lines typical of French and European Georgian decorative arts.

These mirrors were typically constructed from hand-carved pine or lime wood, coated with gesso, and finished with silver leaf gilding. The reflective mirror plates were created using mercury amalgams, which develop characteristic grey oxidisation marks over centuries.

Authentic period pieces display distinct foxing, minor mercury loss, and atmospheric sparkling within the glass matrix. Additionally, original frames show hand-carved joinery marks on the reverse timber backing and natural wear through the gesso layers beneath the silver gilding.

A period overmantel mirror is positioned above a fireplace or styled atop a large console table to anchor a room. Placing the mirror against a contemporary dark painted wall highlights the detailed silver carving and creates a focal point.

Dust the carved timber detailing using a dry, soft camel-hair brush to prevent snagging loose leaf layers. Avoid liquid glass cleaners or harsh polishes on both the gilded surface and original mercury glass, as moisture causes irreversible deterioration to gesso and silvering.
