The Sussex chair design originated in the 19th century, heavily influenced by traditional vernacular rush-seated chairs found in cottages, and was popularised by Morris & Co. during the Arts and Crafts movement.

These chairs are typically constructed from turned hardwoods such as beech or ash, featuring traditional mortise and tenon joints and hand-woven rush seats.

Authentic pieces often exhibit period appropriate wear to the original black painted or ebonised finish, subtle variations in hand-turned spindles, and historically accurate rush weaving patterns.

It functions effectively as an accent piece in a study or living room, where its minimalist functional design complements both contemporary minimalist and traditional spaces.

Maintain stable indoor humidity levels to prevent the natural rush from drying out and cracking, and clean the wood surfaces gently with a dry or slightly damp soft cloth without harsh chemicals.
