Early C19th George IV period mahogany library armchair of Grecian ‘curule’ influence.
Boldly-scaled mahogany framed library armchair with dramatically shaped back raised on reeded tapering forelegs fitted with brass cup castors and wheels. The back legs of exaggerated splayed square section fitted with heavy-quality shaped brass box castors and wheels.
The shape and form of the chair taking its inspiration from an ancient Greek form of chair known as a ‘curule’ . The early C19th saw a fashionable revival in classically-inspired design drawn from the ancient empires of the Greeks and Romans , designers and architects such as Thomas Hope and Charles Heathcote-Tatham were key figures in this movement.
The back having an elaborately carved lumbar splat featuring a stylised coronet design.
In excellent original condition with no breaks or repairs, the mahogany having achieved a rich colour and patina. Has serviceable of upholstery which would perhaps benefit from re-coverin...g.
