The Carolean style, spanning the reign of Charles II, is characterised by rich ornamentation, elaborate carvings, highly scrolled legs, and the widespread use of walnut, reflecting continental European baroque influences.

Authentic period armchairs typically feature solid hardwood frames such as walnut or oak, hand-carved details, mortise and tenon joinery, traditional webbing, and horsehair or wool stuffing beneath heavy textiles.

Authentication involves examining the hand-tool marks on the wood, the type of joinery used, the patina and oxidisation of the timber, and the construction methods of the internal webbing and upholstery stuffing.

Pair the ornate piece with neutral walls, minimalist surrounding furniture, and contemporary lighting to let the historical craftsmanship stand out as a statement focal point.

Protect the wood with microcrystalline wax instead of modern polishes, keep textiles out of direct sunlight to prevent fading, and vacuum upholstery regularly using a soft brush attachment.
