We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Nineteenth-century overmantel mirrors typically feature architectural proportions designed to sit directly above a fireplace mantel, often incorporating classical motifs, arched tops, and elaborate crestings reflecting Victorian or Regency aesthetics.

These pieces were traditionally constructed using a timber core, such as pine or hardwood, overlaid with hand-carved wooden details and moulded gesso, which was then coated in gold leaf or gold paint.

Authenticity is identified by examining the construction backing, the presence of hand-applied gesso cracking (craquelure), foxing or minor oxidisation within the mirror plate, and traditional joinery methods rather than modern fixings.

An antique mirror can be mounted directly above a fireplace or leaned casually against a living room wall to reflect light, create an illusion of depth, and juxtapose historic craftsmanship with contemporary minimalism.

Gilt and gesso surfaces are extremely fragile and should be dusted gently with a dry, soft microfibre cloth, avoiding all liquid cleaners, abrasive chemicals, and direct exposure to intense sunlight.
