This small rectangular decorative box dates to the Victorian period, specifically c.1920, and is suited for a gentleman's library or placement on a coffee table. It is constructed from warm brown amboyna wood with a burr grain pattern, complemented by a tulipwood cross-banded border and fine inlaid line edging. The surfaces display a polished timber finish, while the structural form is clean and straightforward without feet, handles, or carving. The box measures 4 cm high, 8 cm wide, and 11 cm deep. Inside, the compartment is lined with cedar. The exterior shows the natural figure of the amboyna timber with varied dark speckling across the lid and sides. The lid fits flush over the base to create a neat profile when closed. A buyer might place this piece on a desk, sideboard, or coffee table to store small items such as matches, desk accessories, or keepsakes while adding a warm wooden accent to the room.

Amboyna is a highly figured burr wood derived from the Pterocarpus indicus tree, traditionally selected for luxury smallwares, cigarette boxes, and decorative veneering during the 19th and early 20th centuries.

These boxes were constructed using timber framing covered with thin burr wood veneers, frequently finished with fine inlaid stringing and interior cedar linings designed to absorb humidity.

Authentic period examples demonstrate tight, clustered eyelet figures natural to burl timber, precise joinery along the hinges, delicate fine-line marquetry, and age-consistent wear to the base.

Small wooden boxes serve as functional decorative accents when placed on coffee tables, bookshelves, or desks to store small everyday items such as paperclips, keys, or jewellery.

Position the box away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent veneer movement, dusting regularly with a microfibre cloth and applying clear beeswax polish annually.
