Description

A wonderful winged armchair in oak, elm and pine with boldly shaped top rail and wings. The panel back bears the initials I S A and the date of 1735, Often referred to as lambing chairs this is the only dated example I have come across and is a highly unusual and early example. These distinctive regional chairs are generally found in the Yorkshire Dales but the unusual and exuberant shaping of the top rail and the style of the inscription leads me to attribute this fine chair to Wales, probably the North Wales. The piece is a mix of mainly oak and elm with one pine board in the seat, there are remnants of an original green paint that has long been stripped away and the chair now has a rich patina, there is a drawer to the side.

The condition is very good over all and the chair is sturdy and serviceable. The feet have been tipped at some point and there is a repair to the top of the drawer and to the front of one arm, there is an old iron blacksmith repair to one arm.
