Description

An Exceptional Pair of French Régence Style Giltwood Armchairs c.1900

These chairs were probably made in Paris, inspired by the designs of the Régence period in France (1715-1723). The frames have a centred carved shell on the crest rail. The front, back and side seat rails all serpentine with carved scallop shells to the centre and the cabriole legs terminating in hoof feet. The knees of the chair are finely carved with angled shells and foliage and the tops of the arms are carved with an interesting guilloche design incorporating diamonds or lozenges. The high backs and stately proportions are quite baroque.

We have upholstered the chairs to in an antique linen.

This pair of armchairs dates from c.1900 in the French Régence style, manufactured from giltwood, timber, and antique linen in gold and cream colours. Each chair has a high, tall rectangular back, padded armrests, and serpentine seat rails supported on cabriole legs with carved hoof feet. The giltwood frames display elaborate hand-carved details including a central shell cresting on the top rail, matching shell motifs on the apron, foliage carving on the knees, and guilloche decoration along the armrests. The seats and backs are upholstered in neutral cream-coloured linen. Each chair measures 122 cm high, 69 cm wide, and 68 cm deep.
