Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian wall mirror dates from 1880 in the Rococo Revival style, fashioned from dark brown mahogany with a rich timber finish and inset with deep bevelled glass. The heavy wooden frame displays intricate hand-carved floral motifs, dense foliage along the sides, an ornate shell crest at the top centre, and an elaborate scrollwork flourish at the base. Visible details include deeply undercut relief carving throughout the perimeter woodwork and a clear, reflective glass plate showing the surrounding interior. Measuring 107 cm by 86 cm, the piece offers substantial presence suitable for domestic display. It hangs securely on a wall above a sideboard, mantelpiece, or console table within an English country house or traditional residential interior, bringing warmth and decorative texture to a hallway, dining room, or living space.

FAQs

Rococo Revival mirrors, prominent during the mid-to-late 19th century, feature elaborate organic motifs such as acanthus leaves, C-scrolls, and shell crests. Carved from dense hardwoods like mahogany, these frames emphasize symmetry, depth, and fluid natural forms.

Traditional frames of this era were constructed from solid mahogany or lime wood for detailed hand-carving. The mirror plates featured heavy silvering on thick glass, frequently finished with hand-cut bevelled edges along the circumference.

Authentic period pieces show subtle variations in hand-carved relief work, dark oxidation in unexposed wood recesses, and original backboards fixed with historic fasteners. The mirror glass may display minor silvering degradation or light atmospheric spotting consistent with age.

A carved oval mirror provides structural balance when positioned above a hallway console, fireplace mantel, or dining room sideboard. The deep reddish-brown wood tone pairs well with neutral paint palettes, panelling, or saturated wall colours.

Dust the carved frame regularly using a soft, dry brush to reach recessed detail. Clean the glass with a damp lint-free cloth, avoiding liquid contact with the wood perimeter or backboard to prevent moisture damage to the silvering and timber finish.
