FAQs

An overmantel mirror is a large mirror specifically designed to be hung or placed on the mantelpiece above a fireplace. Originating prominently in the 18th and 19th centuries, these mirrors were crafted to reflect candlelight and natural light around the room while serving as a focal point for the interior architecture.

Traditional antique gilt mirrors are typically constructed from a wooden base, such as pine or gesso-coated hardwoods, layered with intricate moulded ornamentations. The gold finish is achieved through either water gilding or oil gilding using genuine gold leaf applied over a prepared bole.

Authentication involves examining the mirror plate for signs of foxing, slight distortions, and hand-silvering inconsistencies typical of older manufacturing processes. Additionally, inspect the wooden backing boards, hand-cut screws or nails, and the composition of the gesso frame for age-related wear and patination.

An antique gilt mirror creates a striking focal point when paired with modern, minimalist furnishings, introducing warmth, texture, and historical contrast. Placing it above a modern fireplace or leaning it against a plain wall allows the ornate craftsmanship to stand out without cluttering the space.

Antique gilt frames require delicate maintenance; they should be gently dusted using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or a clean ostrich feather duster. Avoid using water, chemical solvents, or commercial polishes, as moisture and abrasives can strip the fragile gold leaf and underlying gesso.
