FAQs

Balloon back chairs originated during the Victorian era, gaining immense popularity in Britain from the mid-19th century onwards as a refined evolution of earlier neoclassical seating designs.

Cabinet makers typically utilised native hardwoods such as beech, mahogany, or walnut, often incorporating turned legs and upholstered seats finished with horsehair stuffing and leather or fabric covers.

Authenticity is determined by examining traditional joinery methods, such as mortise and tenon joints, hand-turned wooden components, and signs of age-related patina and wear on the wood and underside.

These classic pieces can be paired with a contemporary minimalist dining table to create a striking contrast, blending historical craftsmanship with clean, modern architectural lines.

Maintain the timber by applying microcrystalline wax periodically to nourish the grain, and clean leather or fabric upholstery gently with specialised, non-abrasive products while avoiding direct sunlight.
