Antique Burr Snuff Box - With Rare Secret Compartment

Description

This circular  burr maple snuff box has a rare addition of a secret compartment, very few snuff boxes wer built with this additional feature.

The lid unscrews to reveal a tortoiseshell interior, this tortoiseshell interior unscrews on the base to reveal an engraving hidden under glass surrounded by a ring.

The engraving represents the profiles of the French Royal family starting with King Louis XVIII, the Duke and Duchess of Angoulême, King Charles X and the Duke of Berry. A final profile at the bottom remains to be identified.

King Louis reigned between 1814-1824.

This snuff box dates from around C1820.
