French provincial and period armchairs, often referred to as fauteuils, developed during the 18th century, reflecting the ornate yet functional design movements of the Louis XV and Louis XVI eras in regional workshops.

Authentic period armchairs are typically constructed from solid hardwoods such as walnut, beech, or oak, featuring traditional joinery like mortise and tenon, hand-carved decorative motifs, and traditional upholstery methods using natural stuffings.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the wood patination, tool marks from hand-carving, traditional joinery construction, type of internal webbing or springs, and wear patterns consistent with age.

Pairing antique carved wood seating with contemporary minimalist furniture creates a balanced interior scheme, allowing the historical craftsmanship to serve as a focal point within a neutral colour palette.

Preserve antique armchairs by keeping them away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent wood splitting, and clean the wooden frame periodically with a soft cloth and appropriate microcrystalline wax.
