This nineteenth-century French Louis XVI Revival china cabinet takes a demilune shape, standing 150 cm high, 70 cm wide and 36 cm deep. The piece is constructed from ebonised wood with a black finish, complemented by a red and white variegated marble top, clear glass panels, curved glass to the front door, and three interior glass shelves. Extensive gilt bronze ormolu mounts provide gold-coloured ornamentation along the frame, edges, and curved cabriole legs ending in shaped feet, alongside a small keyhole escutcheon and a key. Perfect for a living room, dining room, or hallway, this display cabinet suits placement against a wall to showcase glassware, ceramics, or decorative objects within a home interior today.

A vitrine is a glazed display cabinet popularised in eighteenth and nineteenth-century France, designed to display porcelain, glassware, and small collectibles while protecting them from dust. These pieces frequently feature ornate gilt-bronze mounts, fine timber frames, and marble tops.

Traditional French vitrines utilised hardwoods such as mahogany, kingwood, or ebonised timber, topped with imported marble slabs. Decorative elements were typically crafted from cast ormolu (gilt bronze) alongside hand-blown curved glass panels.

Authentic period vitrines display hand-chased ormolu mounts with subtle casting variations and signs of gilding wear around high-touch areas. The glass may exhibit light air bubbles or subtle distortion, while construction methods feature hand-cut joinery and period lock mechanisms.

Position the cabinet as a focal point against a neutral wall in a hallway or living space to accentuate its silhouette. Use the glass shelves to curate a balanced arrangement of contemporary ceramics, art books, or decorative objects to contrast the classic gilt detailing.

Clean glass surfaces with a microfibre cloth and alcohol-free glass cleaner, ensuring liquid does not seep into the timber frames. Dust the ebonised wood and ormolu mounts gently with a soft dry brush, avoiding abrasive metal polishes that can strip original gilding or patination.
