Description

This is a particularly rare c.1800 country low back Windsor chair. This design is one I have always loved but they don't come up very often. A genuine Windsor chair that was originally designed with a low back. This model looks to be made from Ash & Elm and the colour is incredible. The originality is evident and the whole chair has a tactile feel. The low back detail as you can see is the way the chair has been designed as arms and back are all one piece of timber beautifully shaped. A classic piece of furniture that will work in a huge number of interiors.

Windsor chairs originated in England during the early 18th century, evolving from vernacular furniture traditions into highly refined country seating.

Traditional construction typically utilised a combination of hardwoods, commonly featuring an elm seat, ash or yew for the bentwood bow and spindles, and beech or fruitwood for the turned legs.

Authenticity is identified through construction techniques such as wedged through-tennong joints, adzed saddle seats, hand-turned components, and natural oxidisation and wear consistent with age.

An antique Windsor chair adds historical contrast when paired with contemporary dining tables, or acts as a sculptural accent piece in a minimalist study or living room.

Preserve antique wood by keeping it away from direct heat sources and sunlight, maintaining stable indoor humidity, and occasionally applying microcrystalline wax to nourish the patina.
