Overmantel mirrors originated in the 17th century and became particularly popular during the 18th and 19th centuries, specifically designed to be hung or rested on the mantelpiece above a fireplace to reflect candlelight and light from windows.

These pieces typically feature a carved wooden base, often pine or softwood, covered in a layer of gesso (a plaster mixture) and water-gilt or oil-gilt with gold leaf. Hand-carved wooden details and applied gesso ornamentation define the classical construction.

Authentic period pieces often exhibit hand-applied gold leaf, foxing or oxidisation on the original mercury or silvered glass plate, and construction hallmarks such as hand-cut screws, shrinkage cracks in the gesso, and aged timber frames at the rear.

An ornate gilt mirror acts as a striking focal point when rested upon a fireplace hearth or hung above a modern minimalist console table, creating a deliberate juxtaposition between historical craftsmanship and contemporary decor.

Dust the frame gently with a soft, dry brush and clean the glass using a lint-free cloth and mild glass cleaner applied to the cloth rather than directly onto the mirror. Avoid placing the item in direct sunlight or areas of high humidity to protect the delicate gesso and gilding.
