Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This 19th-century English overmantel mirror exemplifies Victorian Classical style, constructed from carved wood and gesso with a distressed off-white painted finish and an original silvered glass plate. The architectural frame displays fluted side columns terminating in carved corner rosettes, a stepped and moulded cornice top, and an arched glass aperture flanked by heavy classical pilasters. Natural signs of age appear across the speckled mirror plate and the worn paintwork along the frame and base. Measuring 157 cm high, 133 cm wide, and 7 cm deep, the scale suits placement directly above a mantelpiece in a principal reception room or hallway within an English Country House setting. The sturdy wooden construction rests securely against supporting surfaces, creating a substantial focal point that reflects natural light while adding historical character to period interiors.

FAQs

During the nineteenth century, overmantel mirrors became central decorative architectural elements in British homes, designed to fit precisely above fireplace mantels to maximize natural light and visually expand living spaces.

Frame construction relied on carved softwoods or hardwoods covered with moulded gesso, a composite of plaster and glue, which was then painted or gilded before housing silvered mirror glass plate.

Authentic period pieces display natural signs of age such as fine craquelure in the gesso, light oxidisation or foxing on the glass plate, and period joinery on the rear wooden backboard.

Position the mirror above a contemporary or period fireplace, or mount it above a hallway console table to create a strong focal point within modern minimalist or classic interior schemes.

Clean the delicate gesso frame using a dry soft brush or microfibre cloth, avoiding liquid cleaners or damp cloths that could soften or dislodge the historic plasterwork.
