FAQs

French antique mirrors from this period typically feature hand-carved wooden frames finished with gesso and paint, often displaying subtle distress from age and classic proportions designed to reflect light in formal reception rooms.

Authentic pieces are constructed using dense hardwoods such as oak or pine for the structural frame, finished with layers of traditional chalk-based gesso and paint, and fitted with mercury or early silvered float glass held in place with wooden backing boards.

Authenticity is identified through examining the mirror plate for foxing and oxidisation, inspecting the hand- cut joinery on the rear frame, and checking for genuine wear patterns in the gesso and paint layers rather than artificial distressing.

An antique mirror serves as a striking focal point when hung above a fireplace mantel or positioned lean-to style against a neutral wall to add verticality, historical contrast, and reflected light to contemporary schemes.

Preservation requires avoiding harsh chemical cleaners on both the painted frame and the fragile silvered glass; instead, use a soft, dry cloth for dust and a lightly dampened microfibre cloth solely for the glass surface.
