The Georgian style spans the reigns of the first four Georges, characterised by classical proportions, architectural influences, and a transition from heavy walnut to refined mahogany. Designs evolved from ornate Baroque forms to lighter, more elegant Palladian and Neoclassical lines.

Makers predominantly used dense timbers such as imported Honduras mahogany or native oak for structural integrity and fine carving. Seats and backs were typically stuffed with natural fibres like horsehair and wool, then traditionally upholstered in high-grade cattle hide or leather and secured with brass tacks.

Authentic pieces exhibit period joinery techniques such as hand-cut tenons, trunnels, and signs of genuine age-related wear including patination and oxidisation on the timber and metal fixings. Secondary woods used in the internal frame, such as pine or beech, should also align with the period of manufacture.

An antique library chair provides a striking focal point when paired with minimalist modern desks or placed as an accent seat in a living room to introduce textural contrast and historical depth. The rich timber and coloured leather complement both neutral backdrops and bold, layered spaces.

Mahogany should be dusted with a dry, lint-free cloth and occasionally treated with microcrystalline wax to nourish the grain, avoiding silicone-based polishes. Leather requires gentle cleaning with a damp cloth and mild saddle soap, followed by application of a specialist leather conditioner to prevent drying and cracking.
