Coromandel is an exotic hardwood native to Southeast Asia, highly prized during the 19th century for its dense grain and rich dark brown colour with contrasting streaks. Victorian makers utilised this rare timber to construct luxury caskets and dressing boxes, often enhancing them with elaborate brass mounts and ceramic plaques.

These boxes typically feature solid timber frames veneered with highly figured coromandel wood, joined with mitred corners. They are frequently fitted with cast or pierced brass corner brackets, escutcheons, and hinges, whilst interiors are lined with velvet, silk, or watered moire fabric.

Authenticity is determined by inspecting the timber grain, hand-cut dovetail or mitred joinery, period brasswork with appropriate patination, and functional brass lever locks bearing maker stamps. The interior construction and lining materials should also align with mid-to-late 19th-century manufacturing methods.

Place the box on a console table, bookshelf, or dressing table surface to introduce texture and historical interest into a room. Its rich wood tones and metallic highlights complement both contemporary minimalist spaces and traditional eclectic interiors.

Maintain the timber by keeping it out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources to prevent the veneer from drying and cracking. Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply a microcrystalline wax sparingly if the wood appears dry.
