Smokers bow chairs, also known as low-back Windsor chairs, originated in 19th-century Britain as sturdy seating commonly found in public houses, smoking rooms, and offices.

They were traditionally constructed using a combination of local timbers, typically featuring a solid elm saddle seat combined with beech or ash for the turned spindles, legs, and steam-bent arm rail.

Authentic period examples exhibit traditional joinery such as wedged through-tenons, hand-turned components with minor tool irregularities, and a deep patina developed over decades of use.

This seating piece works well as a desk chair in a study or as a contrasting accent piece paired with a contemporary dining table to introduce warmth and historic character.

Maintain the wood by applying microcrystalline wax periodically to nourish the grain, and keep the item away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber splitting.
