We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

FAQs

The Napoleon III style, popular during the Second French Empire, draws heavily from eclectic historical revivals, particularly Louis XIV, XV, and XVI designs, combined with opulent finishes and elaborate ornamentation.

Traditional construction typically involves a carved softwood or composition frame coated with gesso, followed by water gilding or oil gilding using genuine gold leaf applied over a bole layer.

Authentic period pieces often feature hand-carved details or period composition moulding, aged mercury or early silvered mirror plates with foxing, and old timber backboards secured with hand-cut headless nails or screws.

Placing an ornate metallic mirror in a modern minimalist space creates a striking focal point, reflecting light and adding textural contrast against neutral walls and clean-lined furniture.

Gilded surfaces are exceptionally fragile; dusting should be done gently with a dry, ultra-soft brush, avoiding all water, alcohol, or commercial cleaning solvents that can strip the delicate gold leaf.
