This 19th-century William IV work box is constructed from warm brown figured mahogany with brass hardware. The tapered box top features a central rectangular element, a keyhole escutcheon on the front, and beaded trim along the lower edge. It stands on a central cylindrical column with a moulded collar, rising from a concave quadruped base with carved reeded scroll feet. Measuring 78 cm high, 46 cm wide, and 35.5 cm deep, this piece provides practical utility as a sewing table. In a modern interior, this work box serves as a functional accent piece in an empty corner, a hallway, or a bedroom. The lift-up lid opens to a fitted interior containing five original lidded storage compartments for small items and sewing accessories. The combination of figured timber veneers and classical architectural supports reflects the grand Regency aesthetic of the period.

A William IV work box is an occasional table produced in Britain between 1830 and 1837, designed specifically to store needlework tools and textiles. These pieces are characterised by robust Classical proportions, figured timber veneers, and heavy turned or carved pedestal supports.

Cabinetmakers during this era predominantly used solid mahogany and figured flame mahogany veneers, often accented with brass keyhole escutcheons, cast iron thread fittings, and polished brass castors.

Authentic William IV furniture typically displays transitional features between Regency refinement and Victorian weight, such as scroll feet, lotus carved detailing, bold gadrooning, and hand-cut dovetail joinery within internal drawers.

An antique sewing table serves effectively as a compact side table beside a armchair, within an entryway, or as an accent piece in a reading corner. Its internal storage makes it practical for organising modern domestic items while adding textural warmth.

Mahogany veneer furniture should be placed away from direct sunlight and modern heat sources to prevent timber shrinkage or veneer lifting. Regular dusting with a soft microfiber cloth and periodic application of a natural beeswax polish maintains the woods lustre.
