19th-century Coromandel Dressing Box C1870 with Working Key.

19th century
Description

This Coromandel dressing box is bound in brass and has brass decorative inlay to the inside. It also has brass excussion and decorative inlay to the top. Condition Report. The large oblong bowl has a chip and has an old repair with some kind of composite. It looks like the lock and harsp have been replaced at some point too. The fabric in the bottom drawer is wearing slightly. Otherwise, there is nothing really to mention - just normal wear and tear. There is a mirror in the lid which comes out with a small catch. The drawer is released by pressing the button at the back of the piece. The box comes with seven pots, with round tops; two oblong and the tortoiseshell tools.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian coromandel dressing box is a 19th-century portable storage case crafted from Calamander wood, designed to hold personal grooming accessories, jewellery, and toiletries.

These boxes were constructed using a solid timber core veneered in coromandel wood, accented with brass stringing, brass edging, and fitted with velvet or leather lined interiors.

Authentic pieces exhibit distinct dark and light contrasting striations in the wood grain, hand-cut dovetail joinery, fine brass escutcheons, and original locks often stamped by Victorian makers.

Position the box on a bedroom dressing table, hallway console, or side table as a functional accent piece that provides discrete storage for trinkets and keys.

Maintain the box by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources, polishing the wood veneer with natural beeswax, and dusting brass inlay with a dry microfibre cloth.
