Description

~ French - Circa 1880 ~

~~ Excellent condition, fully overhauled ~~

A stunning original antique French gilt bronze clock by the renown maker Japy Frères. A beautiful Louis XVI classical design, with curved fretted sides, scrolling brackets and a cherub with cymbals sat atop floral swags. A glimpse of the pendulum swinging can be seen through the fret work.

The dial is also gilt bronze with 12 individual enamel cartouches, engraved minute ring and beautifully cut blued steel hands.

The French movement is of high quality and is by Japy Frères. It is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. Pendulum is original. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. We have a video of the clock, please ask and we will send you a link or paste the following into your browser: https://www.facebook.com/DragonAntiques/videos/947193957463139

Condition of the case is excellent, the original gilding is beautifully clean and bright, some some slight marks and discolouration. The dial is also very good with just some slight nibbles around the winding holes.

Japy Freres was a prominent French clockmaking firm operating in the 19th century, renowned for producing high-quality movements housed in elaborate cast bronze and ormolu cases.

These clocks typically feature fire-gilded or chemically gilt bronze cases, enamel dial cartouches with Roman numerals, and brass mechanical movements driven by springs or weights.

Authenticity is verified by examining the makers stamp on the backplate of the mechanical movement, the quality of the hand-chased bronze casting, and the presence of original enamel dials.

Such a piece serves as a sophisticated focal point on a mantelpiece or a console table, contrasting effectively against minimalist backgrounds or complementing traditional decor.

Preservation involves avoiding harsh chemical cleaners on the gilt surface, keeping the movement away from direct sunlight and moisture, and having the mechanical parts serviced periodically by a professional horologist.
