FAQs

Gilt wood mirrors with ribbon and floral motifs gained prominence during the Louis XVI and Rococo periods in France, later influencing European and British interior design styles characterised by classical symmetry and elaborate ornamentation.

These pieces typically feature a carved wooden or composition frame coated in a layer of gesso, upon which gold leaf or metallic gilt powder is applied by hand before sealing.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the backing boards, hand-carved or moulded details, signs of natural oxidisation and wear on the gold leaf, and the presence of historical silvering deterioration on the glass plate.

Positioning an ornate gilt mirror above a modern minimalist mantelpiece or console table creates a striking focal point, balancing contemporary clean lines with classical texture and reflective depth.

Dust gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or a clean artist brush, avoiding any water, chemical solvents, or abrasive cleaners that can damage the delicate gold leaf finish.
