Pair of Chesterfield Vintage Oxblood Leather Wingback Armchairs & Footstools

1900 - 1920
Description

Royal House Antiques are delighted to offer for sale this absolutely exquisite pair of fully restored Wingback armchairs with hand carved frames and matching footstools in Bordeaux Oxblood which are Chesterfield tufted throughout

Please note the delivery fee listed is just a guide, it covers within the M25 only for the UK and local Europe only for international, if you would like an accurate quote, please send me your postcode and I’ll provide you with the exact price.

These are pretty much the best looking and most decorative wingback armchairs and stools I have seen in a long time, the Cabriolet legs are ornately carved and look to be very well executed, the base rails of the frames to the armchairs are sculpted in a way I have not seen before, they are slightly larger than usual however they come out to a normal size due to all of the extra padding. These are what's known as fully coil sprung frames, or Victorian metal frames, the reason being is that not only is the seat base fully sprung similar to a modern mattress, but as is the back rest

Colour wise they are super unique, these are the only chairs in the entire world with this exact colour finish, they are a Bordeaux which is quite appropriate for those of us that like a good red of an evening!

The whole suite has been fully restored to include having them washed back to the plain leather, then hand dyed six times this wonderful deep rich reddish brown colour, they have then been sealed and waxed down and polished, the timber has been lightly French polished, all in all you have an exquisite suite

The seat cushion internals were replaced in the 1970's, they have some kind of foam in there, I can have these replaced for feather or fiber should the new owner wish for the cost price

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Chesterfield wingback armchair combines high-backed seating and side wings with distinctive deep button tufting and studding. Originally designed in England to shield sitters from cold draughts while trapping heat from open hearths, this style remains a staple of traditional British furniture design.

Authentic Chesterfield furniture is built using a solid hardwood frame, typically oak or beech, paired with deep-dyed full-grain leather upholstery. The construction incorporates hand-tied coil springs, brass tack studding, and dense cushioning material to ensure structural longevity.

Look for signs of natural wear and aged patina on the leather surface rather than uniform artificial grain. Authentic pieces feature individual hand-hammered brass studs rather than continuous stud strip trim, along with deep, hand-tufted buttoning anchored securely into the frame.

Oxblood leather armchairs serve as grounded focal points when contrasted against neutral or muted wall palettes. They pair well with natural wood accents, brass floor lamps, industrial ironwork, or dark academia library styling to balance classic character with contemporary living spaces.

Keep leather furniture away from direct sunlight and radiators to prevent drying and cracking. Regularly dust the upholstery with a clean dry cloth and apply a specialised leather balm or cream once or twice a year to preserve moisture and flexibility.
