The Lid is decorated with a scene taken from a Lithograph by H. LECOMTE and H. VERNET of 1817 entitled ‘BLESSES FRANÇAIS ATTAQUES PAR DES COSAQUES’.

The underside of the base has an intricate geometric design.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the early nineteenth century, French craftsmen developed techniques to compress dense woods such as maple using heated steel dies and hydraulic pressure. This process produced intricate high-relief pictorial designs, often depicting contemporary political events, military conflicts, or mythological scenes, serving as affordable personal accessories.

These boxes were manufactured by steaming or heating end-grain maple wood blocks to soften the fibres before forcing them into carved metal moulds under immense pressure. The lids and bases were then turned on a lathe to form flush-fitting friction joints without requiring metal hinges.

Authentic period examples display sharp detail in the relief carving, authentic age-related patina, and French language inscriptions along the lower margin of the design. Shrinkage over time often results in slightly oval dimensions rather than a perfectly true circle.

Small decorative boxes are ideally displayed within a glass-fronted cabinet of curiosities, arranged atop a stack of vintage books on an office desk, or styled alongside brass desk accessories to complement a dark academia aesthetic.

Dust the surface gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or a clean natural-bristle paintbrush to reach recessed relief areas. Avoid moisture, solvents, and direct sunlight, which can dry out the wood and cause splitting.
