French Cossack Pressed Maple Snuff Box C1820

Description

This interesting FRENCH PRESSED BURR MAPLE SNUFF BOX dates from circa 1820.

The Lid is decorated with a scene taken from a Lithograph by H. LECOMTE and H. VERNET of 1817 entitled ‘BLESSES FRANÇAIS ATTAQUES PAR DES COSAQUES’.

The underside of the base has an intricate geometric design.

There is some damage to the rims, which is shown in the photograph, and the inside collar, which holds the two pieces together, is missing. Despite this, the unusual subject depicted makes this a collectable piece.

This circular pressed burr maple snuff box is a piece of nineteenth-century French Empire design in a warm brown colour with visible signs of age including rim damage and a missing interior collar. The lid has a detailed relief carving depicting a military battle scene with horses, soldiers, trees, and a French text inscription reading BLESSES FRANCAIS ATTAQUES PAR DES COSAQUES along the lower edge. Additional visible details include the turned circular profile of the wooden body and a textured surface grain on the timber. The piece measures 2 cm high, 9 cm wide, and 9 cm deep.
