Tea caddies originated in the 18th century when tea was an expensive commodity, requiring secure, lockable containers to preserve its value and flavour.

Master craftsmen typically utilised dense hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, and burl veneer, often incorporating brass fittings and velvet or silk linings.

Authenticity is determined by examining hand-cut dovetail joints, period-correct brass escutcheons, old secondary woods, and the natural patina developed over centuries.

An antique caddy can be displayed on a sideboard, console table, or bookshelf to add warmth, texture, and historical interest to contemporary living spaces.

Preservation involves keeping the timber away from direct sunlight and heat sources, and occasionally applying microcrystalline wax to nourish and protect the polished surface.
