FAQs

Victorian overmantel mirrors evolved during the 19th century to sit directly above fireplace mantels, often featuring arched tops designed to echo architectural proportions of the period.

They typically utilised a wooden core or plaster composition gesso, layered with gold leaf or metallic paint, and housed heavy silvered float glass secured within a rebated frame.

Authentic pieces generally display period-appropriate foxing or oxidisation in the glass, hand-carved or moulded gesso detailing with age-related micro-cracking, and heavy secondary wood backing boards fastened with old screws.

Positioning the mirror above a contemporary fireplace or leaning it unattached against a plain wall creates a striking focal point that balances historical craftsmanship with minimalist decor.

Dust gently with a dry, soft microfibre cloth, avoiding chemical cleaning agents, abrasive cloths, or excessive moisture that can degrade fragile gesso and gold leaf finishes.
