Description

An incredibly beautiful pair of antique French carved walnut salon armchairs. They were made in France, we would date them to around the 1880-1900 period.

The quality is outstanding, with deep and intricate floral carving throughout. They are a useful size, with generous proportions and perfect for use in various settings around the home.

We have had the frames polished, and they have been re-upholstered in a cream cotton fabric. The condition is excellent for their age, with some minor wear and patina remaining on the frames here and there.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French salon armchairs originated during the 17th and 18th centuries in elite Parisian salons, evolving through periods such as Louis XV and Louis XVI to emphasise both comfort and refined ornamentation.

These chairs are typically constructed from dense hardwoods like walnut or beech, featuring hand-carved details, traditional mortise and tenon joinery, and horsehair or cotton stuffing beneath modern upholstery.

Authenticity is assessed through timber ageing, traditional hand-carved tool marks, handmade joinery without modern fasteners, and the characteristic patina accumulated on the wood over centuries.

They can be paired with clean-lined contemporary sofas or minimalist decor to create a balanced eclectic aesthetic that highlights the classical proportions and craftsmanship.

Preservation involves keeping the timber nourished with microcrystalline wax, avoiding direct sunlight to protect the wood and fabric, and dusting regularly with a soft, dry cloth.
