FAQs

Victorian vanity boxes gained immense popularity during the 19th century as portable containers for cosmetics, jewellery, and personal grooming items, reflecting the eras emphasis on personal presentation and travel.

These pieces were typically crafted from dense exotic hardwoods such as rosewood or mahogany over a secondary wood like pine, frequently featuring finely cut dovetail joints, brass hardware, and mother-of-pearl escutcheons.

Authenticity is indicated by period-appropriate construction methods, hand-cut dovetailing, natural patina on the wood, working brass or steel locks, and traditional interior linings such as velvet or leather.

An antique box can be placed on a dresser, console table, or bookshelf to serve as functional storage for small accessories while adding textural warmth and historic character to a room.

Preservation requires keeping the wood away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking, dusting with a soft dry cloth, and occasionally treating with microcrystalline wax to maintain the finish.
