Description

An Outstanding Pair Of Gillows shell back Hall Chairs. Raised on reeded sabre legs with panel seats and beautifully carved shell backs and painted inscription, around a sunburst, in Latin which reads "Propositi Tenax" which roughly translates as " Never Quit". In very good and original condition. 850mm high, 390mm wide and 470mm deep. English. Circa 1815.

One of a pair of identical chairs is illustrated in Susan E Stuarts books "Gillow of Lancaster and London 1730-1840" plate 177 (page 203) and made in 1811 for The Reverend Holland Edwards of Pennant Conway North Wales

Hall chairs originated in European grand residences during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to provide short-term seating for callers, servants, or messengers waiting in the entrance hall. They were deliberately designed with hard wooden seats, as unupholstered surfaces prevented dirt from outdoor clothing from transferring to the furniture.

Regency hall chairs were typically crafted from solid dense hardwoods, predominantly dense Cuban or West Indian mahogany, chosen for its structural strength and grain quality. Backrests were carved directly from timber slabs and often detailed with painted polychrome coat of arms or family crests.

Authentic Gillows pieces frequently feature a stamped mark reading GILLOWS or GILLOWS . LANCASTER on the underside of the frame or top edge of the seat rail. High-grade mahogany, precise wood joinery, heavy timber weight, and refined carving details such as shell motifs and reeded legs are signature characteristics of the workshop.
