This pair of Victorian mahogany elbow chairs exemplifies the Georgian Revival style, dating to 1880. Rendered in a warm brown timber finish, the armchairs showcase shaped openwork fan back splats with central carved rosette motifs, swept armrests, and serpentine fronts. The seats are upholstered in a terracotta and cream striped fabric. Additional visual details comprise cabriole front legs with carved knee decoration. S & H Jewell of London made these seats in excellent original condition, measuring 103 cm high by 53 cm wide, with a 48 cm seat depth and 43 cm seat height. Positioning these elbow chairs around a dining table, in a study, or as decorative seating in a drawing room enhances an English Country House interior. Their substantial wooden frames and traditional upholstery provide comfortable dining or occasional seating. The structured proportions suit domestic environments requiring refined period seating with classic carved accents and striped textile upholstery.

Elbow chairs, often referred to as carver or open armchairs, feature raised side supports designed to rest the arms comfortably. Historically crafted in mahogany during the Georgian, Chippendale, and Hepplewhite eras, they were traditionally positioned at the head and foot of formal dining tables or used as occasional study seating.

These chairs typically feature solid mahogany frames known for dense grain and durability, constructed using mortise and tenon joinery. The backs often display intricate piercing or carving, while seats are padded and upholstered over a wooden frame, supported by shaped cabriole or turned legs.

Authentic examples show signs of hand-carved detailing, natural shrinkage around joinery, and an accumulated patina from age and handling. Inspecting the underside of the seat frame often reveals hand-cut corner blocks and traditional frame webbing methods.

A pair of mahogany carvers works exceptionally well flanking a hall table, positioned on either side of a fireplace, or placed at the ends of a contemporary dining table to create visual contrast. They can also serve as functional desk chairs in a home office setting.

To preserve the timber finish, dust regularly with a soft cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year in the direction of the grain. Upholstery should be vacuumed gently using a soft brush attachment and kept out of direct sunlight to prevent fading.
