FAQs

Captains chairs originated in the 18th century, evolving from traditional Windsor chair designs to provide sturdy, comfortable seating for offices, libraries, and ships.

These chairs typically feature solid native hardwoods such as elm, ash, and beech, constructed using traditional joinery methods including steam-bent backrests and pegged mortise and tenon joints.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved saddle seats, period-appropriate tool marks, natural patination of the wood, and signs of age-related wear rather than machine-tooled precision.

An antique captains chair serves as a practical desk chair or a contrasting accent piece in a contemporary study, adding warmth and historical texture to minimalist spaces.

Preserve antique wood by keeping it away from direct heat sources and sunlight, and periodically feeding the surface with a quality microcrystalline wax to maintain the finish.
