Steve Sly Japanese Works of Art has dated this piece to the 18th Century.
The box came direct from a private USA collection and was accompanied with a label that indicated it was Momoyama period 1568-1600, if that were the case it would be remarkably well preserved. I personally choose to ere on the side of caution and suggest this delightful little box to be 18th century Edo period. Regardless of its exact age it is a super rare little price range collectable for your Japanese works of art collection.
