Victorian library armchairs were designed during the 19th century for comfort and reading, typically featuring deep-buttoned leather upholstery, dark hardwood frames such as mahogany or walnut, low seat heights, and padded armrests.

These chairs were constructed using solid timber frames, horsehair padding, steel coil springs, brass castors, and deep-grained hide leather fastened with brass upholstery studs.

Look for original brass ceramic castors, hand-stitched leather upholstery displaying natural surface patination, turned timber legs showing age-appropriate wear, and hand-carved frame joinery rather than modern machine mouldings.

Position the armchair alongside a simple side table and contemporary brass floor lamp to create a functional reading corner, allowing the rich timber tones and leather texture to act as a focal point.

Apply a specialized leather conditioner periodically to keep the hide flexible, keep the piece away from direct sunlight or radiators to prevent drying, and dust the carved timber frame regularly with a soft dry cloth.
