A pair of nineteenth-century French Empire period salon chairs presents heavily gilded wooden frames with delicate carving and detailing. Each chair stands at 91 cm high, 43 cm wide, and 43 cm deep, with a seat height of 47 cm. The construction incorporates fluted legs, guilloche apron carving, and a pierced back splat topped with decorative floral motifs. Pale blue patterned silk upholstery covers the round seats. Signs of age appear on the current upholstery, which is a little tired and shows one hole to the seat. The gilded gold finish catches the light across the ornate mouldings and carved timber surfaces. These French chateau style salon chairs suit placement in a formal reception room or drawing room as decorative seating.

French Empire seating from the early 19th century is characterised by Neoclassical proportions, rigid symmetry, fluted columns, and classical motifs inspired by ancient Roman and Greek architecture, often executed in dark woods or burnished gilding.

These chairs were crafted using hard woods such as beechwood or walnut for the carved frame, coated with gesso and layered with gold leaf via water gilding. Seating was typically stuffed with horsehair and upholstered in silk damask or brocade.

Authentic period pieces show hand-carved joinery, square mortise and tenon joints, and natural wear to the gilding revealing red or grey bole clay underneath. Modern reproductions often lack hand-cut timber construction and feature uniform gold paint rather than genuine leaf.

Giltwood salon chairs function effectively as architectural accent pieces when placed in entry halls, flanking a console table, or positioned in a bedroom corner, providing historic texture alongside clean, contemporary furnishings.

Giltwood frames should be dusted exclusively with a soft, dry microfibre brush or feather duster, avoiding water or chemical polishes which dissolve gesso. Upholstery should be kept out of direct sunlight to prevent fabric deterioration and colour fading.
