Late 19th Century Chinese 2-Tier Hongmu Pedestal or Urn Stand, Qing Dynasty, Circa 1880

19th century
Description

This exquisite late 19th century Chinese 2-tier Hongmu pedestal or urn stand from the Qing dynasty is a testament to the era’s skilled craftsmanship. The stand features an inset panel top, which is both functional and aesthetically pleasing, providing a secure base for displaying cherished items. The entire piece is adorned with delicate carved and pierced lotus motifs, a symbol of purity and enlightenment in Chinese culture, which are meticulously rendered to create a sense of depth and texture.

The structure is supported by shaped square supports, which transition into elegant leaf scroll feet, indicative of the organic inspiration that characterises much of traditional Chinese design. These supports not only add stability but also contribute to the overall visual harmony of the piece.

Adding to its historical value, the underside of the stand bears an old label indicating it was once part of the collection at James Hudson’s Burley Grange, located in Burley in Wharfedale. This provenance suggests the piece was not only appreciated for its functionality but also treasured as a collectible item, reflecting the cultural exchange and appreciation for Chinese artistry during the period.

Overall, this Hongmu pedestal or urn stand is a beautiful representation of Qing dynasty furniture, combining utility with an elegant expression of traditional Chinese motifs and design principles. It would have been a distinguished addition to any interior, enhancing the space with its rich material and intricate details.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Qing Dynasty Hongmu furniture is defined by its dense dark hardwood construction, openwork carving along the aprons, and precise joinery techniques developed in late 19th-century China.

These stands were traditionally crafted from dense tropical hardwoods such as Hongmu or rosewood, utilising floating panel construction and frame-and-panel assembly without metal fasteners.

Authentic pieces feature traditional mortise-and-tenon joints, hand-carved details with subtle variations, natural wood grain under polished wax, and substantial structural weight from dense timber.

Position the pedestal in an entry hall or room corner to elevate sculptural ceramics, potted flora, or decorative bronzes, creating a focal point of historical texture.

Maintain Hongmu timber by placing it away from direct heat sources and extreme humidity changes, dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth, and applying natural beeswax sparingly.
