FAQs

An overmantel mirror is a large mirror specifically proportioned to hang above a fireplace mantelpiece, popularised during the 18th and 19th centuries to reflect light and enhance the sense of space in reception rooms.

These pieces typically feature a wooden frameoften pine or hardwoodlayered with gesso and carved ornamentation, fitted with hand-silvered or mercury-backed glass plates.

Authentic pieces often display foxing on the glass, hand-cut joinery in the wooden backing frame, crackled gesso beneath the paint layers, and heavy weight due to thick timber construction.

Positioning an overmantel mirror above a fireplace adds immediate architectural weight, whilst leaning it against a living room wall creates an effortless, layered look that bounces natural light around the space.

Clean the glass sparingly with a soft, lint-free cloth and distilled water, avoiding harsh chemicals that can damage the silvering, and dust the gesso frame gently with a dry, soft brush.
