FAQs

Gilt wood mirrors feature a wooden base coated with a thin layer of gold leaf or powder, often applied over a prepared gesso layer. While originating in earlier centuries, heavily carved and twisted frame styles gained significant popularity during the Victorian and Edwardian periods for adding reflective light and opulence to formal interiors.

Traditional construction typically involves a carved softwood or hardwood base coated with layers of gessoa mixture of chalk and binderto create a smooth surface for gilding. Real gold leaf or Dutch metal is then applied by hand, often featuring joined mitred corners and original backboards secured with handmade or early machine-cut screws.

Authentication involves inspecting the frame construction, gesso layer, and mirror plate. Genuine antique pieces often display fine craquelure in the gesso, signs of hand-carved detailing, oxidation or foxing on the original mercury or silvered glass plate, and period-appropriate fixings on the reverse rather than modern staples or composite resin mouldings.

An antique gilt mirror can serve as a striking focal point by contrasting its ornate metallic texture against minimalist, neutral walls or modern architectural spaces. Positioning it opposite a window maximises natural light distribution, while leaning it casually against a wall introduces relaxed yet sophisticated elegance.

Preservation requires extremely gentle dusting with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or a clean ostrich feather duster to prevent damaging the delicate gold leaf. Water, chemical solvents, and commercial cleaning sprays must be strictly avoided, as moisture can lift the underlying gesso and cause irreversible flaking of the gilded surface.
