This rare Victorian tea caddy takes the form of a miniature chest of drawers, crafted from warm brown mahogany with satinwood panels, tulipwood cross-banding, and inlaid stringing. Dating to 1880, the piece measures 21.6 cm high, 21.6 cm wide, and 16.5 cm deep. The hinged lid opens to reveal twin internal lidded compartments for black and green tea, each fitted with a small turned bone knob handle. Below the top compartment, the frontage displays a series of false drawer fronts, each punctuated by a brass keyhole escutcheon and paired turned bone knobs. The entire cabinet sits upon a plain rectangular wooden plinth base. In a modern interior, this tea caddy is suited for placement on a sideboard top in a dining room, living room, or hallway as a decorative display object. Its compact proportions allow it to sit easily on top of traditional wooden furniture while adding historical character and storage for small trinkets within an English country house setting.

Popular during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, novelty tea caddies fashioned as miniature chests of drawers were crafted to store loose tea leaves securely while serving as decorative tabletop items mimicking full-sized furniture.

Hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or rosewood were commonly used, often detailed with marquetry inlays, brass or bone escutcheons, and interior lids to protect the contents.

Authentic pieces display hand-cut joinery, period-correct brass or bone fittings, natural surface patination, and original lidded internal compartments or removable canisters.

An antique wooden tea caddy adds historical character when displayed on a sideboard, office desk, or bookshelf alongside classic brass accessories and framed prints.

Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish annually to nourish the timber and preserve its natural patination, keeping it away from direct heat sources.
