The George II period, spanning from 1727 to 1760, is characterised by a transition from heavier walnut designs with Dutch influences to the more ornate, carved mahogany aesthetics influenced by Palladian architecture and early Rococo curves.

Authentic period mirrors typically utilise native timbers such as walnut, oak, or pine as a base, often enhanced with finely figured veneer and giltwood carvings. Construction features hand-cut joinery, pegged joints, and historic hand-silvered glass plates.

Authentication involves examining the timber grain, oxidisation on the mirror plate, hand-beveled edges, and the presence of period-appropriate construction methods such as old pine secondary woods and hand-forged iron fixings.

Placing a historic timber frame against a neutral or softly painted wall allows the rich warmth of the wood grain to function as a focal point, creating a balanced contrast between old and new design elements.

To protect the timber and historic finish, keep the mirror away from direct sunlight and fluctuating humidity. Clean the glass sparingly with a soft, lint-free cloth, avoiding harsh chemical sprays that can damage the surrounding wood or gilt.
