Japanese lacquerware, known as urushi, is an ancient craft involving the sap of the lacquer tree applied to a wooden base. The Taisho period spanned from 1912 to 1926, representing a distinct era of Japanese design that blended traditional craftsmanship with modern influences.

Authentic pieces are typically constructed from a wooden core coated with multiple layers of refined tree sap. Decoration often incorporates maki-e techniques, where metallic powders such as gold and silver are sprinkled onto the wet lacquer surface.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the depth of the lacquer finish, the precision of hand-painted or dusted metallic motifs, and the presence of artist or workshop signatures or stamps on the underside or interior.

This piece works well as a focal decorative object displayed on a low-profile sideboard, coffee table, or open shelving unit, where its reflective surface and detailed motifs can be appreciated without clutter.

Lacquer items should be kept away from direct sunlight, extreme temperature fluctuations, and high humidity to prevent warping or cracking. Cleaning should be done gently using a soft, dry cloth without chemical polishes.
