Overmantel mirrors gained prominence during the Victorian era as central decorative features designed to sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece. They served both to bounce natural and candlelight throughout grand reception rooms and to showcase craftsmanship through elaborate gilded frames.

These mirrors were constructed using softwood frames, typically pine or lime, layered with gesso and covered in gold leaf. The reflective glass plate was manufactured using mercury amalgams or early silvering processes backed by solid wood panels.

Authentic pieces feature pine backboards with hand-sawn markings, natural foxing or oxidisation on the original mirror plate, and subtle wear to the gold leaf showing red or grey bole beneath the surface.

Position the mirror directly above a main fireplace mantelpiece to create a formal focal point, or lean it against a wall atop a low console table in an entryway to enhance light and visual spatial depth.

Dust the frame regularly using a dry soft-bristled brush or microfiber cloth without water or liquid solutions, which can dissolve water-gilded gesso. Clean the mirror glass carefully using a lightly dampened cloth, avoiding contact between moisture and the frame edge.
