Description

A high quality set of four walnut, amboyna and parcel gilt salon chairs, dating from the Victorian period 1837 - 1901.

The chairs have open backs - almost in the form of a cartouche with an upholstered oval pad in the centre held in place by four small carvings which protrude from the delicate outer frame and are finely moulded in walnut with a secondary inner gilded moulding and a veneered centre in Amboyna.

The front legs are turned with a parcel gilt fluted decoration upon brass castors, the legs are joined into the frame above with a dual panel of rosettes above each front leg with rails that mimic the same design as the back.

The chairs have been recently upholstered, they do however have a few small minor blemishes commensurate with use. Overall the chairs are in excellent condition, with only a few age related chips and marks.

Salon and parlour chairs from the Victorian and Edwardian periods were designed for formal reception rooms, featuring elegant carved wooden frames, often in walnut or mahogany, and delicate proportions suited for entertaining.

These chairs typically feature solid hardwood frames such as walnut, oak, or mahogany, joined with traditional mortise and tenon techniques, and upholstered over horsehair or springs with patterned textiles.

Authenticity is identified through period-appropriate joinery, hand-carved detailing, natural ageing of the timber, and traditional upholstery methods such as webbed bases and hand-tacked trimming.

They can be integrated as accent seating in a living room or bedroom, contrasting period craftsmanship against clean contemporary lines to add texture and historical character.

Preservation involves keeping wooden frames away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent drying, applying microcrystalline wax periodically, and using specialist upholstery cleaners for the fabric.
