Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Victorian brass sconce mirrors became popular during the 19th century as a functional way to amplify candlelight in homes before widespread electricity. They combined decorative metalwork with reflective glass to enhance illumination in hallways and living spaces.

These pieces typically feature a wooden backing frame mounted with embossed or repousse brass plaques, often incorporating integrated swing-arm candle sconces cast from brass. The glass is usually bevel-edged and held securely within structured wooden mouldings.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit period-specific indicators such as hand-cut bevels on the mirror plate, traditional joinery in the wooden frames, and natural patina or oxidation on the brass elements rather than uniform modern finishes.

They can be mounted on either side of a fireplace, above a sideboard, or in an entryway to introduce metallic texture and historical contrast to contemporary minimalist or maximalist design schemes.

Preservation involves dusting the wooden frame with a soft, dry cloth and cleaning the mirror glass with a mild glass cleaner applied to a cloth rather than directly to the surface. The brass should be left unpolished to maintain its historic patina, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners.
