The Carolean style, emerging during the reign of King Charles II in the late 17th century and later revived in the 19th century, is characterised by rich ornamentation, elaborate scrollwork, pierced carved motifs, and the extensive use of walnut.

These pieces typically feature solid walnut frames shaped with hand-chiselled joinery, mortise and tenon construction, and intricate pierced splat backs, often accompanied by upholstered seats edged with decorative fringe.

Authentic 19th-century revival pieces often exhibit machine-cut elements alongside hand-carving, different patination characteristics on the timber, and nineteenth-century upholstery techniques or secondary woods beneath the surface.

This type of statement seating works effectively as a focal point in a contemporary setting, paired with a minimalist desk or positioned alone in an alcove to contrast clean architectural lines with historic texture.

Maintain the timber by keeping it away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent splitting, and apply microcrystalline wax periodically to nourish the walnut surface without sealing in moisture.
