Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian nursing chair is a low-seated, armless or low-armed upholstered chair designed during the nineteenth century to allow mothers to sit comfortably close to the hearth while nursing infants.

Victorian ebonised pieces were constructed using dense hardwoods such as beech or oak that were stained or lacquered black to imitate ebony, often adorned with gilt metal mounts and ceramic or brass castors.

Authentic pieces feature period-appropriate joinery, natural wear on the ebonised finish exposing underlying timber on high-touch areas, stamped or fitted brass castors, and gilt mounts secured with traditional fixings.

Place the chair in a bedroom alcove, dressing space, or alongside a fireplace hearth to add historic texture and contrast against contemporary wall colours and clean-lined architecture.

Dust the ebonised wood frame regularly with a dry microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical sprays that degrade the black lacquer, and clean the textile upholstery using a soft vacuum attachment.
